Position Overview

Eastern Ontario Regional Laboratory Association (EORLA) invites applications for the position of Head of Division, Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH).

The Ottawa Hospital provides bilingual tertiary care and has affiliation to the University of Ottawa, The Ottawa Heart Institute, the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, the Rehab Centre, and Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre. EORLA serves a population of 1.3 million people within the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) in Eastern Ontario.

EORLA is an incorporated not-for-profit member-based organization providing full spectrum acute care services to its 16 members. The Ottawa Hospital is one of 16 member organizations and Hospital-based laboratory medicine services for the Champlain LHIN are provided under the auspices of the Eastern Ontario Regional Laboratory Association (EORLA).

The Division handles yearly over 1100 bone marrow aspirate and biopsy specimens, over 4000 hematological diagnostic flow cytometry specimens, 2,500 thrombosis investigations and 2,000 bleeding disorder workups and daily over 1,500 CBC’s and oversees the transfusion of 50,000 blood products yearly.

Working collaboratively with laboratory medical/scientific, administration, management, and technical staff within TOH and across EORLA, the successful candidate will provide medical/scientific leadership for the Division at TOH which includes a team of 7 Hematopathologist and 150 managements, supervisory and technical staff. Functioning within the governance structures of TOH and EORLA, the candidate’s administrative responsibilities will include day to day oversight and planning for TOH Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine laboratories to ensure compliance with all applicable quality, regulatory and licensing standards, and participation in Divisional, Departmental, Hospital and Regional committees. Within the EORLA regional Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine structure, the candidate will have primary overall responsibility for analytical/technical and clinical service at TOH and will work together with the Reginal Head of Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine to deliver a regional Laboratory service.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the overall Hematopathology and Transfusion Medicine service work including on call service. Moreover, the successful candidate will engage in the teaching activities of the undergraduate and residency programs. Outstanding research opportunities can be supported through interactions with The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and with the University of Ottawa Research Network.

The ideal candidate will have previous progressive leadership experience, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate and interact with a diverse range of individuals and teams including laboratory technical, administrative and medical/scientific staff, clinicians, nurses and other health care providers as well as non-clinical staff. Written and oral French language skills would be an asset as EORLA provides services in both of Canada’s official languages.

The candidates must hold a MD degree and must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the province of Ontario. The successful candidate must be a fellow in Hematological Pathology with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada.

As a pre-condition of employment, all new EORLA employees will be required to obtain and provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check dated within six (6) months from the date of issue.
